Five College
The new
University of the Arts London comprises five renowned
colleges of arts, communication and design. Formerly
known as The London Institute, the University has an
international reputation, an income of c. £100 million,
and some 35,000 students from over 120 countries. The
University and its Colleges now represent a unique and
vibrant community facing an exciting range of
opportunities and challenges, and with the potential to
become the world's most formidable learning centre for
the creative arts.
Two significant global developments play to our
advantage. The demand for post 16 education is rising and
with it the number of students. There is also a growing
recognition of the importance of the creative industries
and the need for top quality higher education in the
creative arts.
However, increased demand brings increased competition
and the University must meet growing student expectations
for an enjoyable experience of consistently high quality.
It also has to develop stronger, relevant links with
industry to provide students with a stepping-stone to
successful careers.
Fortunately the University of the Arts London is already
a unique and vibrant community of colleges whose alumni
continue to be amongst the most influential and indeed
famous practitioners in their fields. Individually the
colleges have distinguished histories and have always
been at the forefront of developments in art and design -
with undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees all
now on offer. Together, the colleges are the largest
leading provider of creative education in the UK, and the
constituent colleges are:
Camberwell College of Arts
Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
Chelsea College of Art and Design
London College of Communication
London College of Fashion
Having built on the reputations and expertise of these
individual colleges in the UK and abroad, becoming a
university was the next logical step in the evolution of
arts education in the United Kingdom. Indeed becoming a
specialist University will increase recognition of the
roles art, design and communication play in the cultural
and economic life of the UK, and will raise the profile
of these disciplines nationally.
To seize these opportunities and to compete, the
University recruits and retains staff of the highest
quality. Along with students and graduates they define
the University as a special place in every sense. To be
the world's leading centre for learning and creativity
they concentrate on achieving excellence, building a
dynamic and innovative community, providing first class
facilities for staff and students, and offering
progressive learning opportunities to all students.
Building on the brand of each College they provide a
comprehensive range of the highest quality courses to a
socially and culturally diverse body of students.
The University of the Arts London will continue to
innovate and stimulate creativity, value diversity and
excel in all they do.
